Where: Pitlochry, Ballechin Wood and Strath Tay

Distance: Between 4.0 miles (6.4 km) and 9.9 miles (15.0 km)

Grade: Moderate

Terrain: Mix of farm lanes, forest roadways, rough footpaths over moorland and through woodland, an old railway trackbed, and a riverside path

Transport: Buses from Grandtully and Aberfeldy

Now designated as part of the Rob Roy Way, this walk climbs up steeply from Pitlochry through Ballechin Wood passing near Clachan an Diridh, or the “stones of the ascent”. On exiting this commercial forest, the views open up across moorland and rough grazing before dropping down into Strath Tay beside the Tulliepowrie Burn. After crossing the River Tay, the return to Pitlochry can be made by bus from Grandtully, changing at Ballinluig. Alternatively, connecting return buses can be taken from Aberfeldy which is reached by continuing along the route of an old railway line and a riverside path. If time permits, there is a chance to visit the Birks of Aberfeldy and the Falls of Moness.
